Motivation is funneled through the optional Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed manual gearbox, the 3.42:1 geared differential and onward to the Rally II wheels wrapped in Goodyear Polyglas F70-14 tires. The car has undergone a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration to concours standards and retains its original sheet metal and numbers-matching drivetrain: an L78 400 CI V-8 that rests between the frame rails, which came from the factory rated at 250 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque, breathing through a Quadrajet carb and exhaling with Gardner exhaust. This 1972 Regatta Blue Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 is one of 2,429 built, a Southern California car that was sold new at Chazen Pontiac in Santa Monica, California, and it’s still wearing its blue California plates and dealer plate frame. By the strike’s end on September 27, thousands of partially assembled vehicles had to be unceremoniously crushed, as they could never meet the 1973 crash standards. The workers at GM’s Lordstown, Ohio plant went on strike for 174 days, decimating Firebird (and Camaro) production. The 1972 Pontiac Firebird was teetering that year sales fell drastically as the muscle car market started to collapse, and then the unthinkable happened. The latter was enough to make grown men cry. All the while, the Vietnam War was still brewing, OPEC’s oil embargo was on the horizon and automakers were cutting horsepower amidst stricter government regulations. It was riding the highs of the mini skirt, David Bowie morphing into Ziggy Stardust, playing Pong on the television and watching “The Godfather” at your local drive-in.

America was on one heck of a rollercoaster ride in 1972.
